Extreme protectionism resulting in trade tensions between countries affect both producers and consumers. The ongoing tension between the United States and China, which has already escalated into a trade war, could benefit the Philippines and other ASEAN countries, according to some analysts. With electronics and electrical (E&E) equipment forming the foundation of the country’s export basket, the manufacturing sector stands to gain as the E&E industry is highly integrated into the global value chain. However, this opportunity is possible if the Philippines could attract foreign investments and businesses from the tariff-affected countries.
